The first week of June 2009 saw 12 of us arrive at Cayo Largo. This was my second visit but the first visit for the other 11.
As I had advertised, this place is amazing. By week’s end the group completed 7 Grand Slams and 1 Super Slam.
Not bad considering almost half of my group were first time Permit anglers. Add to that another 6 permit hooked and lost and you have a pretty wild week.
I can’t tell people that there are lower numbers of large tarpon than the Jardines anymore. We saw good numbers of fish over 70 pounds with one tarpon of about 110 pounds hooked (on the 9 weight, bad choice).
Mauro continues to manage the Cayo Largo operation wonderfully and the guides are as good as I have seen. Professional, knowledgeable, good English skills, and great people skills make these guides as good as it gets.
I thought the Sol largo hotel was even better organized and professional than the past year.
Can I come back next week?
